Were the Sixties the crossroads of modern civilisation? Were they the last chance we had to make a choice between two alternative social structures?

Yes - according to Gregory Paul's debut novel Two Eyes Two Heads (£6.99, paperback, 364 pages), an allegory loaded with metaphor and symbolism.

Most symbolic of all is the boat which a menage of Northern England hippies try to turn into a floating theatre and art gallery.

The story revolves around the boat and the family which leads the revamp - the grossly dysfunctional Devannys. They leave a trail of human destruction in their wake as they blindly fumble their way to disaster.

But Paul's novel shows deft comic touches as he describes the adolescent angst of the three Devanny boys and their passionate alliance with a sophisticated London model and her nymphette ward.

Two Eyes Two Heads takes a new viewpoint on the Sixties - showing how the ripples of a cultural revolution affected people in a small backwater town. It is sharp, touching, and often very funny.
