Profile

"I started writing poetry at secondary school and discovered that I could earn an A* for poetry homework, leading to a Distinction in English on my end-of-term report. At the end of my first academic year there was even the promise of publication in the School Magazine. Then WW2 intervened and life changed with evacuation, but I continued writing poetry until I left school. Unfortunately those poems were lost.

My family considered College to be wasted on a girl, so I did as I was told, sat an exam for the London County Council and became a clerk at sixteen. An entitlement to free evening classes however, helped me to learn typing and shorthand, so that I escaped eventually to enjoy secretarial work at twice the money. Poetry got lost in a busy life.

Marriage and babies followed but becoming a grandmother broke the dam and I discovered the need to express my feelings in verse. Some poems have been published, many more squirreled away, so my grateful thanks to United Press for giving me this opportunity to 'come out'.

Happy reading. Perhaps something in this book will resonate with you so that you become one of my 'far shores'."
