NO ORDINARY GIRL

Mermaid girls,
Underwater pearls,
Swimming so wild and free,
Beneath the clear, blue sea.
Mould, heat and freeze,
The strength of their powers increase.
As they glance at the full moon’s eye
Into the ocean they dive,
Swimming at a speed so high.
They try to keep their transformation a secret...
And will never reveal it.

Shabana Rizliya Zain
Dedicated to the stars of my favourite mermaid fantasy TV show - ‘H20: Just Add Water,’ and my best friend Destiny.

RHAPSODY

A rhapsody of fine art and music,
The melodic notes in classical symphonies.
Aristocratic attitudes among the bourgeoisie,
In the flamboyant effect of the cultivated connoisseur.
As the decorative decadence of the middle classes,
An ornate extravagance for interior living.
Inside the rooms are dressed in sumptuous silks,
And paintings portray art and history.
Antique guilt restoration at the artists studio,
In another world of artistic splendour.
As creative charisma lives in designer architecture,
For the fanciful imagination of the dream myth.
Where the culture of the past reflects poetic stories,
And the style of the Rococo enlivens florid feelings.
Tales of Bavarian castles with turrets and a moat.
In a fairytale land fabled with romance,
Embellished with tapestries of damask cloth,
The literature of a novelistic life.
Themes narrated in the culture of another era,
Fashioned on film in a cinematic reverie.

DO OR DARE

It's his world, it's do or dare
The main thing is do they care?
When one hears the news it's so scary
That the error of there daring
It's a game of chance, that's a fact
That is life it's your choice
To do or not is the answer
In this world of many disasters
If your heart tells you yes, do for the best
Life is like that, it's a test
To do what is right always
Without hurting others they say
Life's full of fiction, take the facts
It always pays of the fact
To love and respect your fellow men
It's the best for everyone in the end
Be honest, be good to the world

THE TRAVELLER

I am as free as the wind that blows
Where to find me no one knows
Deciding myself, which route to take
Being alone at the camp I make
My horse pulls my home on wheels
No one asks me how I feel
I want nothing from the powers that be
Except the open road, a life that's free
Living off my wits and honest toil
Loving the birds that sing and the smell of soil
Life is simple, no stress or fuss
No boss to please, no running for a bus
At times I visit an old horse fair
Meet old friends and see lasses with silken hair
Do a deal or perhaps a swap
Sing a few old songs, drink a few beers; at this special stop
Hook up the horse and moving on
Back to the lanes where I belong
Below the big sky I love to roam
This is my life, so leave me alone

EGO TRIP

It's terribly hard to be humble
When you're as gifted as me
I'm smart, I'm decisive
I'm witty, incisive
I'm faultless, it's easy to see
I've brought this diploma to show you
For modesty, it was bestowed
I've a cup for endeavour
And a shield saying I'm clever
Which I bought from a shop up the road
I've founded a club for the brilliant
There's nobody in it but me
You can't join this clique
Because I'm unique
And my therapist tends to agree

A FAIRY TALE PICNIC

The sun shone very brightly
Through the tall trees of the forest
As I entered into a clearing
And rested on a bench
Serene and beautiful
Like the portrait of a painting
And the pages from a fairy tale
A children's paradise
My thoughts came to reality
I could not believe my eyes
There were goblins, elves and pixies
With fairies by the dozens
I joined them in their fun and games
And invited to their picnic
And received a fairy trinket
A token of love and friendship
I awoke from my illusion
With everything as it was
And memories of a magical dream
With a trinket in my pocket

WELL I NEVER

The Irish terrier said "Good morning"
As he wagged his tail, and walked by
I was literally gobsmacked, but smiled and replied
"Yes isn't it?"
As he grinned and winked his eye
I went to post a letter
A neighbours cat followed me too
"I'll walk with you" she purred contentedly
"Thankyou dear Maxine" I said "Please do"
I patted her head as she walked content our mutual togetherness,
And love was so true I returned to weed the garden,
Where Bertie the blackbird flew too,
"We'll have a nice chat and after that,
I'll sing" he chirped "A beautiful song for you"
I closed my eyes later, and said goodbye
To my fantasy world where God's beautiful animals
Birds and creatures spoke too
And wished so much - deep in my heart
That my fantasy world was true

THE INVADERS II

The sons of the Gael, the ships of Miled,
Sailed along the coast 'til Inver Sciene.
Then marched in good order to Slieve Mis.
There, a queen of the de Danaan
Met them, with a train of attendants.
With her train of beautiful women
And her druids attending upon her;
And her wise men following her.
Amergin, son of Miled, asked her name,
She said it was, Banba, wife of MacGruill,
Son of the Hazel. They went on then
To Slieve Eibhline. There another queen
Of the Tuatha de Danaan met them,
Her women and her druids with her.
They asked her name, I am Fodla,
The wife of Macht, son of the Plough.
They went on to the hill of Uisnech
And saw, in wonder, a woman.
She was most beautiful,
A wide eyed queen, fair and graceful.

FANTASTIC REALITY

Is it false, is it true
People sticking their knives in you
I do not see the point
Do they think I'm Sunday joint
Prodding here, prodding there
Ah, become a coconut at a country fair?
They could aim all day and night
Their claws long and very bent
Will never get them heaven sent
Instead they stay at hell's dark door
Shouting out for more and more
Their target rises above hell's fires
Duty calls and I must aspire
To carry on with mammoth task
Despite the evil behind those masks
I will win and show fair face
Holding up for world of grace

THE DIVINE MOMENT

An exotic apple ripens out my throat
Causing nothing but poetic rhythms to simultaneously float
Each breathless speech envelops an orange sun
Each split ray reflects each class, colour and religion
Like a volcano erupting, I am free at last
These beads of burning seeds heat inside me with a blast
Similar to that familiar warm, spicy cayenne pepper
summer breeze
Eighty four degrees, adrenaline shifts my blood streams
Like a yellow rippled river
A penny drops
No beginning, no end, no never-ending stop
I attract honey chocolate blocks filled with people holding hands
Drawn to my speech like magnetic oriental rooftops
Reaching to the sun
Attracting their positive energy
I glide like racing clouds, my confidence increased
I am light like their feathers, sharp like the beast
I close my eyes, envision midnight filled with violet skies,
blue and white, silver obedient stripes
My love scatters into the crowd like shattered diamonds
We all become one
This divine tasteful moment

KINTYRE GARDEN

It is fact that today there has been heavy rain
True that floods caused problems again.
On the fourth day of September
Giving all a day to remember.
Evacuations, closed roads, rivers bursting banks,
Fiercer than Coleridge observing the one red leaf,
News and history in different ranks.
Fact is, that I stood in Kintyre garden;
The wind whispering winsome notes through the beeches.
Twigs dancing to the merry tune, leaves tickling the Ceres Burn torrent,
Branches bending in the wind, bowing.
The stems of one shrimp plant rent.
At one with nature, yet stimulation excites fantasy,
Calliope and Euterpe dance again in Pitscottie,
Whispering wind, lilts and airs.
A musical fantasia overtakes worldly cares.
Rich imagination brings a palomino through the woods,
Shetland collies, Shetland ponies, mint and cinammon,
Finches and wrens, swallows and swifts,
Gather in spirit with sylphs, practice for Samhain.
Windlestraw sways, fairies bring gifts.
Focus on honeysuckle fairy, love and joy in the rain.

MY FANTASY ISLAND

If I had a magic carpet, I know that I would be,
On a special little island, far away across the sea.
My sunshine retreat, so near, yet so far,
Surrounded by warm coral seas,
With crystal clear waters, teaming with life, and
White waves as far as one can see.
Sipping Malibu beneath palm trees waving gently in the breeze,
While dark eyed maidens with long dark hair, bring you everything you need.
Lazing every day on golden sands and soaking up the sun,
Without a care in all the world, away from everyone.
Swimming every day in the clear blue sea, enjoying every minute,
Dancing until dawn, then taking it easy, with time that has no limit.
But my fantasy island is so far away, and is not what it seems,
For it's all imagination, and only in my dreams!

A TRUE GOOD FRIEND

I's not something you learn at school,
There's no boundaries nor any rules,
You don't take it for granted, it's not something you see,
You have to believe in it, just let it be.

To have support, an ally, a true good friend,
To help each other, a hand to lend,
As time goes by, year after year,
I'm hoping that most of them, are filled with cheer.

Your letters have lifted me, more than you know,
The words of inspiration, I'll never let them go,
It's funny how a simple card, can life your heart,
Even when at times, your world seems to fall apart.

The sun will shine, after the rain,
All this hard work, won't be in vain,
These words, are to say, Thank you,
Friends like you, are very few.

Michèle Wood

ARE WE SURE OF OUR FACTS?

Knowing world,
Full of information,
Believing it has answers.
Yet can't make up its mind,
Fact or fantasy,
Or fantasy fact,
All life may be a fantasy,
Apart from its pain,
And its sorrow.
